Gears Tactics Review Round-up

You might be surprised to learn this, but Gears Tactics launches tomorrow on PC. Coming to both Steam and the Microsoft Store, there’s been an odd lack of hype going into the game’s release. Is it because Gears Tactics is a bit of a dud? Quite the contrary, in fact.

According to the numerous reviews posted around the web this morning, Tactics is an excellent conversion of the traditionally third-person based shooting into a turn-based strategy title. Adapting a style similar to XCOM, it seems developer Splash Damage has successfully managed to capture what makes Gears of War so special in another format.

One of the best things happens to be its appearance on Xbox Game Pass for PC. If you aren’t quite sure whether or not you want to buy this, a cheap subscription to Microsoft’s Netflix-style service will let you try it out without making a hefty investment. We’re getting ahead of ourselves, though. Here is what everyone else is saying about this spin-off.

Destructoid: 9/10 – “There’s a smart experience here, one that feels both authentically Gears and tactics. That’s the best possible outcome.”

PC Invasion: 9/10 – “From the fast-paced action that never lets up to the brutal firefights that’ll keep you thinking about your next moves, it’s a stellar spinoff.”

Eurogamer: Unrated – “There are moments in which Tactics does manage to be the successful marriage between Gears of War and XCOM that you might have hoped for, but as a whole package, I’m not convinced it’s ever quite as good as that.”

VG 24/7: 3/5 – “Any turn-based strategy game that can successfully mimic the changeability of third-person shooters deserves to be celebrated for it, and in its finest moments, Gears Tactics does just that.”

PC Gamer: 83/100 – “Gears Tactics’ structure couldn’t quite sustain the 25 hours or so it took me to get through the campaign, but slap the combat into a sequel with a couple more strategic systems that balance out the variety and pacing, and I’d honestly rather play it over XCOM.”

Screen Rant: 3.5/5 – “It’s probably not the best turn-based squad tactics game ever nor the best Gears of War title out there, but Gears Tactics is an impressively solid adaptation of the beloved Xbox franchise.”

Game Revolution: 4/5 – “Gears Tactics makes a wonderful addition to the franchise, and I hope that it spins off as its own series. It avoids many of the pitfalls of the genre and provides a streamlined experience that was a breath of fresh air.”
