When it comes to certain sports there are those which easily fit virtual reality (VR) such as racers or golf, while others require a little more work. Skiing/snowboarding definitely falls into the latter category due to the intensity of the gameplay. That hasn’t stopped indie developer RainSoft tackling the challenge, set to release Powder VR as an Early Access title in a few months.
Having previously created VR horror John Lazarus – Episode 1: Dead Man’s Origin, RainSoft’s Powder VR first appeared in late 2019 offering players a chance to test the beta via its Discord server.
An extreme sports sim, Powder VR combines Skiing, snowboarding and wing suiting into one adrenaline-filled experience. With the full release slated to feature six mountains to carve up, you’re given the choice of whether to enjoy a more arcade or simulation style of gameplay, setting times on downhill races, performing tricks in freestyle or having the freedom to explore on your own terms.
Recently, RainSoft has released updates and what changes are coming to improve Powder VR as it gears up for release. Beta v0.6.8 in May added things like slo-mo spins, a revised spinning mechanic and improved switch/fakie controls. While the upcoming beta v0.7.0 will see menu enhancements to ensure Powder VR is suitable for players of all levels.
The previous open-world snow park will be changed in favour of quick race options. This was done because: “After a lot of testing, we found out that the snow park was just too technical for beginners,” the studio said. The free-roaming won’t disappear for those who love the lack of competition, there will simply be nice entry-level slopes in a story mode to get acquainted before tackling the trickier courses.
Currently, Powder VR is expected to officially launch on Steam in August, supporting Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. As further details arise, VRFocus will let you know.
