While many gaming franchises are currently experiencing strained development phases amid the COVID-19 crisis, others (such as Nintendo’s) have largely achieved success throughout. Meanwhile, the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise seems to be one outlier that is absolutely all over the place – and it’s difficult to tell where our beloved anthropomorphic buddy is going.
To start off the series’ strange transitional phase, Sonic began this year with a bang via the successful Sonic the Hedgehog movie, raking in plenty-o-moola at the box office. Although the plot was criticized for its play-it-safe nature, the movie was a fun romp that saw Jim Carrey in his legendary, top comedic form. A sequel was hinted at in the film as well, which will likely be pursued given Sonic the Hedgehog‘s financial success.

Additionally, a music album was announced called Sonic the Hedgehog DJ Style Party. Rather than just any old soundtrack album, it will feature a wide range of songs from the Sonic series. However, this album (as its name suggests) is set to contain a wealth of club-style beats.
There was recent news regarding the Sonic comic series as well. Namely, publisher IDW announced that there will be a new writer heading the Sonic comic. While not the focal point of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, the comic series does serve as another arm to add narrative to the popular platforming series.
As for Sonic’s gaming endeavors, things are even more up in the air. Even though a trailer for Sonic at the Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020 dropped recently, Sega elected to withhold any Sonic-related announcements for a while. Now, other than an Olympics-based mobile title, there is no telling where the Sonic franchise will head next in the gaming-sphere.
For years, the Sonic series has traversed ill-defined waters in its hit-or-miss series entries. Considering its wild expansion into other forms of media, it’s hard to tell where the series is heading. With a changing comic series and new music album, Sonic‘s growth in popularity is apparent. Further, the series’ cinematic reach will likely continue after first film’s success. Above all though, Sonic the Hedgehog‘s mainline gaming future is anyone’s guess.
