The two biggest names on Xbox Live’s Games with Gold lineup for October 2021 come from the Xbox 360 — and the Sega Dreamcast, originally. Castlevania: Harmony of Despair and Resident Evil Code: Veronica X headline the backward-compatible offerings for the Halloween-themed month.
Resident Evil Code: Veronica X is the high-definition remaster of 2000’s Resident Evil — Code: Veronica for the Dreamcast. The remaster launched for Xbox 360 (and PlayStation 3) in 2011.
The platform adventure Castlevania: Harmony of Despair is the fifth Games With Gold game with the words “Castlevania,” a colon, and “of” separated by two other words in its title. Symphony of the Night was offered in July 2019; Lords of Shadow in August 2019; Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate HD was free in December 2019; and Lords of Shadow 2 was available in March 2020. Harmony of Despair stands apart, however, by being a cooperative multiplayer take on the Castlevania formula.
The Xbox One games are Aaero and Hover. Aaero, which launched in 2017, is a rail shooter with rhythm and action elements. Hover, which also launched in 2017, is an open-world parkour game where the “Gamers,” rebellious heroes of a futuristic city, “fight against oppressing laws while performing incredible tricks and combos.”
