These PS5 Games Are On Sale Before Launch, In A Roundabout Way

Both Microsoft and Sony have taken steps to make sure owners of their current consoles can play upcoming games when they release and when their new hardware hits, which is a nice boon for customers and a nice bit of marketing from the companies. Microsoft is unifying its Xbox One and Xbox Series X physical discs by offering one “Xbox” version that is compatible with both platforms, touting how backward-compatible the Series X will be with other Xbox console games. Meanwhile, pre-order listings for PS5 games show two different boxes, one for next-gen and one for PS4, but plenty of PS4 games will have free upgrades to PS5, which will probably be a little confusing for those who are window-shopping at major retailers at launch. The distinction also has the potential to cost you more money if you aren’t careful.

PS5 pre-order listings for a trio of upcoming Ubisoft games–Watch Dogs Legion, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and Far Cry 6–are currently live on Amazon. Curiously, the PS5 versions are full price at $60, while the PS4 listings of these games are currently discounted to $49.94.

Since you can buy any of these three games on PS4, insert the disc into your PS5 to get the free upgrade, and play the PS5 version, it’d be a mistake to pre-order the PS5 version as it stands. You can check out the pre-order listings for each game below.

PS4 pre-order listings

  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla — $49.94 ($60)
  • Watch Dogs Legion — $49.94 ($60)
  • Far Cry 6 — $49.94 ($60)

It’s certainly possible Amazon will update the PS5 listings to the same price as the PS4 versions. As of now, however, it makes no sense to get the PS5 edition unless you really want a case with PS5 box art, and it doesn’t hurt to lock in your PS4 pre-order at this price as you can cancel anytime before the item ships. Hopefully, this doesn’t become a trend, because those unfamiliar with the ins and outs of upgrades to next-gen games could wind up spending more money simply because the case says PS5.
